What I’m [Listening] To – Jan. 6, 2018

I will readily admit that I’m addicted to podcasts.

In fact, This American Life’s Episode 447: The Incredible Case of the P.I. Moms was my gateway drug.

At the beginning of my last semester in college, my professor called me up and asked if I had an internship that semester. I did not and she encouraged me to apply for a intern reporter position at KWBU, Waco’s NPR station.

I distinctly remember telling her that I didn’t have any news background but she assured me that I could write well and that was all that mattered.

I went to the interviewing having never listened to NPR. In fact, the only thing I knew about NPR was that it was a bunch of monotone voices and classical music.

During the interview the President & CEO of the station asked me if I listened to NPR. My only answer was a “I do now!” The station manager suggested checking out an episode of This American Life to test the waters.

And the rest is history.

I listen to a wide variety of shows from daily podcast of my favorite radio morning show, true crime podcasts, staples like This American Life or Snap Judgement, and even fiction podcasts.

My most recent binge-listen (if that’s a thing) is “Heaven’s Gate” produced by Stitcher and Pineapple Street Media. It’s hosted by Glynn Washingon the host of Snap Judgement.

It uncovers the story behind the infamous Heaven’s Gate cult – the ones who committed mass suicide to join the spaceship following Comet-Hale Bopp in March ’97. It focuses beyond the fatal decision of the group and talks with family members of the cult members, survivors and seeks to answer the question of how this all happened.

The series in total is 10 episodes ranging from 45-60 minutes long.

Curious? Listen to the trailer episode here.
